Mama's Vegetarian, 18 S 20th Street. $6, Large Mama's Sandwhich,

From the outside Mama'a looks more like a flower shop then an eatery. Just look for the green awning with the red tomato and you should be fine. A few steps in and you feel like you're in an old Italian deli that hasn't had any work done to it since the 70's. Except without many products, and a few tables. This is the kind of place I love. Behind the counter the employees seem to be mostly kids, which is usually not a good sign. We'll let that slide and check out the menu. The only thing I could afford for this column, and still fill myself up seems to be the Large Mama's Sandwich.

I walked up to the glass counter, and told the kid what I wanted. After asking me white or wheat He grabbed a small thick pita and cut it open making a pocket. he through in a healthy scoop of hummus, followed by tomatoes and cucumbers, then asked if i wanted it spicy. Of course I said yes and he added some kind of hot sauce, about 4 falafel balls, some stringy vegetable (cabbage?) wrapped it up and was done. The whole process took all of 45 seconds. I was back at my cubicle eating in no time. Yes I eat at my desk, I cant be away from a computer that long.

The bread was soft and spongy, but had a good flavor. The falafel balls were a bit too greasy for me, and didn't really seem in place with healthy eating, but they tasted pretty good. the vegetables and hummus all melded together great, but that's hard to mess up. One major downside was in the way the sandwich was put together. There was zero consistency. Which was fine except for the hot sauce, which managed to gather at the bottom waiting to attack me. Without any warning my mouth was suddenly burning. Since my sandwich filled up my entire lunch budget I only had free coffee to settle down the flames. Not cool, next time im getting it without hot sauce.

Im going to say 6 out of 10 for mamas vegetarian. Suffering from a poorly designed sandwich, and too much grease for healthy food.
